Research:
Ron's main research interest is reproductive physiology of honey bees. His
Ph.D. study focused on factors influencing the development of ovary in workers.
Although workers are considered nearly sterile, they can develop their own ovaries
when the queen is lost. Ron's current research is on the effect of Nosema infection
on worker behavior and physiology. Nosema apis is a protozoan parasite of the
midgut and can infect both workers and the queens. Infected workers curiously
start foraging earlier and Ron is studying through what mechanisms the parasite
is accomplishing this. This study is supported by a USDA-NRI
grant.
